„Topological Phases of Materials and Their Applications”

Abstract: In 2016, Nobel prize was awarded for discovery of topological phenomena in matter accounting for non-trivial phases and phase transitions. At the foundation we have the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions and the Haldane model of spin chains with non-trivial edges. The non-trivial phenomena in these cases were explained using the mathematical concepts of Topology. The former and latter have led to the development of topological states of matter; redefining our understanding of condensed matter. Ever since, topological phases such as, topological insulators, semi-metals, superconductors, Kondo insulators etc. have been at the forefront of quantum materials unravelling unconventional physics. These materials find applications in numerous field such as, spintronics, nano-electronics, quantum computations, catalysis etc. Topological insulators host multi-functional properties making them even more promising. These materials are characterized by, insulation in N dimensions and conduction across N-1 dimensions. Such phenomena have been predicted theoretically and observed experimentally in bulk as well as low dimensional materials. Such non-trivial phase of matter can be observed either intrinsically or by employing various techniques such as, application of strain/stress, electric fields, functionalization, dimensional-engineering etc. We present, non-trivial topological quantum phases of matter in bulk and low dimensional materials and discuss future prospects in terms of applications.

Prof. Prafulla K. Jha is a professor of physics at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Gujarat. He is currently heading the department of Physics, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Over the years he has been recognized by several awards such as, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Teacher Award, prestigious TWAS-UNESCO Associateship twice, Regular Associateship of ICTP, post-doctoral fellowship by ministry of Education and Culture, Government of Spain and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has also been awarded Young Scientist Award by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Post doctoral Fellowship by University Grants Commission, Ministry of Education, Government of India. He has been elected as the Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Gujarat Science Academy. His group is actively involved in research on various problems using DFT and AI-ML such as, topological materials, thermoelectrics, heterogenous catalysis, magnetism, superconductivity, sensors/detectors, drug-design and delivery mechanisms. He has actively contributed to the field of condensed matter physics by publishing more than 300 research papers in peer reviewed journals of national and international repute with h-index of 42 and citations of more than 7000. He has served as member of the editorial board for several journals. He has guided 28 students and is currently supervising 8 students for Ph.D. His dynamism is evident from the completion of 25 research projects funded by major national and international agencies and several responsibilities such as Deputy Director, Office of the Career Advancement for the Students, Coordinator, Publications Unit and Core Committee member of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University. He is also working as Nodal Officer of the Consortium of Academic and Research Ethics, Western Region, India. He is serving as member of the different committees in other institutes/universities and agencies.
