M.A. Bhawna Sharma will present some of her work carried out outside her PhD programme. Bhawna is a PhD student contributor to Physics World, the online publication of IOP Publishing, one of the world's leading scientific publishers, headquartered in Bristol, UK. In this role, she writes research news articles covering recent developments across physics for a broad scientific audience. In 2026, she published two articles in Physics World. The first covers a study showing that chirality, a property long thought to require exotic crystalline materials, can instead be engineered purely through the geometry of a nanoscale nickel helix, enabling non-reciprocal magnon flow at room temperature without any applied magnetic field. The second reports the first experimental demonstration of switchable electric and magnetic skyrmions embedded in free-space terahertz light pulses, achieved using a chip-sized nonlinear metasurface, with potential applications in noise-resilient wireless communications. In this seminar, Bhawna will briefly introduce both works, explaining the key physics behind each result. She will also share how PhD students can become part of the broader physics community through science communication, and why such participation matters both personally and for the field.
