The Faculty of Physics conducts research in many crucial branches of modern physics and astronomy. The Faculty has been awarded the high research category (A) by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. It employs 32 research workers, including 16 senior academics.
The Faculty is entitled to confer the university degrees of doctor (since 2008; the Institute of Physics, later transformed into the Faculty, has had these rights since 1996) and of habilitated doctor (since 2015), both of physical sciences in the field of physics. Since 1997 seven Faculty members have obtained their professorships and 13 habilitated doctor degree, whereas 20 researchers have received the doctor’s degree.
Several Faculty members hold important offices and positions in scientific organizations as well as on editorial boards of a number of scientific journals. Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Maziewski is a member
of the Physics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. dr hab. Krzysztof Szymański is a member of The International Board on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect. Prof. dr hab. Jan
L. Cieśliński is a member of the Journal of Physics A advisory board and prof. dr hab. Michał Spaliński has a seat on the editorial board of the International Journal of Modern Physics A. Prof. dr hab. Piotr Jaranowski and dr hab. Marek Nikołajuk are members of the International Astronomical Union.
The Faculty is home to the Białystok Branch of the Polish Physical Society.
